ChatGPT Ads Can Talk Back Now. But They Still Can’t Buy You a Citation.

The One Thing

OpenAI just gave ChatGPT ads a voice of their own — and confirmed, in writing, that it still can’t buy you a citation.

Sponsored Agents, AI-built ad campaigns, and deeper Shopify and HubSpot integration all went into testing or shipped this month. None of it changes who ChatGPT recommends on its own — that’s still earned, not bought.

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT ads have a voice of their own.

Which is exciting (I think?).

But what many are missing in the online conversation is that OpenAI said that going all-in on ads still can’t “buy you a citation”.

This month OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents with qualified advertisers. They also launched AI-built ad campaigns and deeper Shopify and HubSpot integration.

They also said that a sponsored conversation is separate from ChatGPT's recommendations.

A client sent me a screenshot this week — a ChatGPT conversation with a little sponsored bubble at the bottom, offering to connect her to a business she'd never worked with before.

She wanted to know two things:

  1. Could she buy that for her own business?

  2. If she did, would ChatGPT start recommending her instead of her competitor?

The first answer is maybe, depending on her category. The second answer, thankfully, was answered for me by OpenAI.

Week after week, the pattern stays the same: a platform reshuffles something about AI search, in its own direction. Google shipped more AI Mode ads the same week a judge called its arrangement “really unfair,” and its spam team confirmed it's hunting scaled content.

Now OpenAI is telling you upfront exactly what its new ad feature can — and can't — do.

Key Takeaways
  • Sponsored Agents shipped Sep 16, 2026 — a business-sponsored AI conversation after a user clicks an ad. Still a limited alpha; OpenAI isn’t accepting early-access requests.
  • OpenAI’s own words: a Sponsored Agent conversation is “distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers.” The ad doesn’t touch what ChatGPT recommends on its own.
  • $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days — tens of thousands of advertisers, live in 40+ countries.
  • Eligible categories right now: household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, digital products and education. Financial, healthcare, and legal are case-by-case.
  • Shopify’s ChatGPT Ads app goes international Sep 23, 2026 — the day after this post goes up.
  • None of it replaces the actual work. SEO and GEO still decide whether ChatGPT trusts you enough to recommend you for free.

What’s a Sponsored Agent in ChatGPT Ads?

On Sep 16, 2026, OpenAI rolled out a batch of ChatGPT Ads features at once.

The headline feature is Sponsored Agents — after a user clicks an ad, they can choose to open a conversation with an AI agent built to represent that business, walled off and labeled as sponsored inside ChatGPT itself.

Definition

A Sponsored Agent is a ChatGPT Ads format that lets a user open a separate, clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent after clicking an ad.

Currently a limited alpha test — selected advertisers only, no early-access applications open.

Advertisers also picked up AI-assisted campaign tools inside Ads Manager. With it, you can describe a campaign in plain language and get suggested copy and imagery back (though you still approve everything before it runs).

There's optional text customization that adapts your headline and description to whatever conversation it's showing up in, and translates it automatically.

And ChatGPT Ads now plugs into HubSpot, so you can run and track campaigns without leaving your CRM, plus a Shopify app that's already live for U.S. merchants and goes international on Sep 23.

But — as always — you need to read the fine print: Sponsored Agents are not something you can buy yet.

OpenAI's help center is blunt about it — “available only to selected advertisers in a limited alpha test,” and it isn't taking early-access requests.

So treat this as a preview of where the ad product is headed, not a channel you can turn on this week.

The fine print

Sponsored Agents are not something you can buy today. OpenAI’s own help center says it’s available “only to selected advertisers in a limited alpha test,” and it isn’t accepting early-access requests. Treat this as a preview of where the ad product is headed — not a channel you can turn on this week.

Is my business eligible to advertise on ChatGPT yet?

Before you get excited about the prospect of letting ChatGPT run amok with your brand, you’ll still need to check whether your category is even allowed to run these ads.

OpenAI updated its ad policy Sep 10 and says it’s focused on four buckets:

  1. Household and consumer goods

  2. Local services

  3. Travel and entertainment

  4. Digital products and education

Financial, healthcare, and legal advertisers can get approved too, but it's case-by-case, not automatic.

There's a line OpenAI won't cross: no ads next to what it calls “vulnerable user–model interactions” — mental and personal health conversations, emotionally reliant conversations, and other sensitive moments.

What can a ChatGPT ad do — and what can't it?

In their Sep 16 announcement, they say a Sponsored Agent conversation “is distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers.”

That seems to mean that the ad can put you in front of someone at the exact moment they're deciding. It cannot make ChatGPT trust you, recommend you, or cite you when nobody paid for the placement.

“The conversation with a Sponsored Agent is distinct
from ChatGPT’s independent answers.”

— OpenAI, “Reimagining advertising with AI,” Sep 16, 2026

So now even OpenAI is telling you the rules of the road: Paid gets you in the room. It doesn't get you believed once you're there.

So does this change your SEO and GEO strategy?

No, at least, not right now.

Whether ChatGPT recommends you in its own independent answer still comes down to the same things it always has:

  • Content that answers the question someone's asking

  • Structured so the model can lift it cleanly

  • Content backed by evidence nobody else can hand it

A media buy doesn't touch any of that. I’d say it sits next to it.

If anything, this update makes the SEO/GEO case easier to articulate, because OpenAI is the one making it now. When a client asks whether they should just buy their way into ChatGPT's answers, the answer is on OpenAI's website.

One question: does the ad buy the recommendation?

Same platform. Two very different things you're paying for — or not.

What I'd check before you spend a dollar on ChatGPT Ads

If your category's eligible and you're considering a test, here's the order I'd do it in. Skipping the first move is how people end up paying for attention they were already getting for free.

3 moves before you spend a dollar on ChatGPT Ads

01

Check your category

Search your own vertical against OpenAI's current ad policy before you build anything. Eligible isn’t the same as approved.

02

Get the landing page ready

OpenAI reviews the ad and the destination together. A vague page can sink an ad that was otherwise approved.

03

Keep building what ads can't buy

Every dollar on placement should sit next to real SEO/GEO work — that's still what earns the unpaid recommendation.

OpenAI didn't have to tell us that ads and answers are two different things.

But they did anyway — probably because being clear about it is what keeps advertisers from feeling like they got played once they realize the ad didn't move the independent answer at all.

In the end, the ad is a new door into a conversation that was already happening.

It doesn't replace the work of becoming the kind of source ChatGPT reaches for on its own. That’s still just as — if not more — important as ever.

Work With Me

Should you test ChatGPT Ads before you know if you're getting cited for free right now?

Most people react to a new ad product one of two ways — rush to test it because it's new, or ignore it because it's alpha-only and confusing. Neither one tells you what you need to know: where you stand with ChatGPT today, before you've spent a dollar on it.

I'll show you exactly where you're already showing up — or not — in ChatGPT's independent answers, so you know whether a paid test is filling a real gap or just paying for attention you were already getting for free.

FAQ

Does advertising on ChatGPT help me get cited in ChatGPT's regular answers?

No. OpenAI explicitly states a Sponsored Agent conversation is separate from ChatGPT's independent answers. Paid placement can start a business-sponsored conversation; it doesn't influence what ChatGPT cites or recommends on its own.

What are Sponsored Agents?

A ChatGPT Ads format, launched in limited alpha Sep 16, 2026, that lets a user open a distinct, clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent after clicking an ad. It's only available to selected advertisers right now, and OpenAI isn't accepting early-access requests.

Is my business eligible to advertise on ChatGPT?

During this early phase, OpenAI's primary focus is household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education, with financial, healthcare, and legal ads possible case-by-case. Several categories — adult content, gambling, political advocacy, unsubstantiated wellness claims, among others — are prohibited outright.

Does ChatGPT Ads replace the need for SEO or GEO work?

No. Ads can put a brand inside a qualifying conversation. They don't make ChatGPT trust or independently recommend that brand — that's still earned through the same content, structure, and evidence work that drives citation everywhere else.

How big is ChatGPT Ads right now?

OpenAI reported a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days from launch, as of Aug 31, 2026, with tens of thousands of advertisers across 40+ countries.
