Why? Because AI systems evaluate extractability, not just the traditional authority. So, you need a way to find and close that gap, post by post.
Why does well-ranked content fail the citability test?
The short answer: SEO and GEO optimize for different things.
Traditional SEO optimizes whole pages — title tags, keyword density, backlink profiles.
AI systems don't evaluate pages that way. They evaluate individual sections for how cleanly and directly they answer a specific question.
Content written to rank is typically built context-first — you earn the point by building up to it. AI citation works in reverse. The answer has to come first, in the opening sentences of each section, or the AI moves to a source that leads with it.

What that means practically: the posts you most need to fix for GEO may not be your highest-traffic posts at all.

What citability signals should you audit for?
A good GEO audit scores six writing-layer signals. These aren't technical factors — no page speed or crawl configuration here.
Instead, we’re going into the craft layer: the writing decisions that determine whether AI systems extract your words or your competitor's.

You analyze and then score your content on these six signals. I find that basic pass/fail per signal works — you're triaging, not writing a technical report. The goal is to see what isn’t there, and what needs to be done first to help get your content back on track.
Audit Tip
The fastest single check: read the first paragraph of each post. Does it answer the post's core question in plain language before any context or windup? If not, that's your first fix — and it usually takes less than ten minutes.
How do you score a post for citability?
The audit doesn't need to be scientific. You're making a judgment call: is this post high, medium, or low citability potential?
I like to think of scoring in three tiers:
Tier 1 — High ROI (Fix These First)
These are posts with existing organic traffic that score low on citability signals. The content is already findable — search engines have decided it's worth ranking. But AI systems can't extract it cleanly because the writing layer isn't there.
These posts have the highest return on effort. The traffic foundation is built. You're retrofitting the writing.
A Tier 1 fix typically involves: rewriting the opener answer-first, converting headers to questions, adding a FAQ block with schema, and sourcing any major unsupported claims. Budget 60–90 minutes per post.
Tier 2 — Light Touch (Quick Wins)
Posts with decent structure that are missing 1–2 citability elements — usually no FAQ block, or keyword-fragment headers instead of questions. Thirty to forty-five minutes each. Do these after Tier 1.
Tier 3 — Leave or Rewrite (Low ROI)
Low traffic, weak structure, thin content, no clear question being answered. Not worth patching — that's a rebuild. Schedule a full rewrite for later or leave it and put the hours into Tier 1 and 2 posts instead.

Which posts should I prioritize fixing for GEO first?
Triage by the intersection of three things: what you already rank for, what AI systems are actively fielding questions about, and where you're invisible when you shouldn't be.
Pull your top 10–15 posts by organic traffic in Google Search Console. These are your highest-value candidates — you've already done the work of earning search visibility.
For each post, run the topic as a query in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Does your post appear as a cited source? If not, that's your gap.
Score each post against the six-signal checklist. Posts that rank but don't get cited — and score low on 3+ signals — go to Tier 1.
Work in batches of 5–10 posts. More than that becomes a grind before the habit is built.
Two post types that almost always belong in Tier 1: informational posts answering questions AI tools commonly field ("what is X," "how does Y work"), and comparison posts ("X vs. Y," "best tools for Z").
Both are heavily cited formats because they match how people query AI before making decisions.
What does a fixed post look like?
Here's a stripped-down before/after from a post I audited on AI content strategy. The content was solid. The structure was the problem.

How long does a citability fix take?
Based on what I've seen across client work and my own content, the time it takes to update existing content can vary. It depends on both the optimization needs for the specific piece of content and the overall performance of the brand.
Sometimes it’s a quick fix, and other times I need to really overhaul the entire piece of content.
In general, here's a typical breakdown.
